Ductless Systems
We really run the full-temperature gamut here in San Antonio, TX, from the extreme heat in summer to the more biting temperatures in winter. At AiRCO Heating and Air Conditioning, we know we Texans expect many options to keep us comfortable during these temperature changes. One of these options is a ductless, or mini split, heating and cooling system. These ductless mini split systems can sometimes offer the efficiency and flexibility a more traditional system can’t.
What Is It Exactly?
A ductless system is a heating and cooling system that’s entirely ductless. It doesn’t rely on your home’s ductwork or require the installation of additional ducts. This system consists of only an indoor unit (an air handling unit), an outdoor unit (a condenser or compressor), and its small conduit (housing the condensate drain, power cable, suction tubing, and refrigerant tubing) that connects the two units. It’s extremely flexible since the indoor unit’s mounted either on a ceiling or a wall and can be installed almost anywhere in your home. In addition, since there’s no ductwork to leak energy, a ductless mini split is highly efficient, saving you in energy costs.
Where to Use It
These heating and cooling systems are ideal for additions, basements, garages, areas in your home you don’t use as often or that don’t seem to have even heating and cooling, and rooms currently using a space heater or window air conditioner. If you’d like to have your garage temperature controlled while you’re out there working, this is a great solution. If you have a guest bedroom that you’d prefer to not heat and cool when no one’s visiting, here’s the answer. If you’d like to add a room on to your home or turn your three-season sunroom into a four-season sunroom, a ductless mini split is perfect. Our expertly trained and NATE (North American Trained Excellence)-certified technicians are happy to come out to your home and help you assess how and where this system can make your home more comfortable and save you energy costs.
The Benefits
- Efficiency. With the high heat we see here during the hotter months, the electricity cost of cooling our homes can climb pretty high. A ductless mini split gives a higher rate of efficiency due to the lack of ductwork. No ductwork, no lost energy through leaks and poor sealing. As much as up to 30 percent of energy can be lost through ductwork leaks.
- Flexibility. Due to this system’s small size, you have a lot of flexibility with where you’d like it installed. Also, there’s flexibility in heating and cooling rooms, allowing customization. With a ductless mini split, you can install four indoor units, each with its own thermostat, to one outdoor unit. This gives you the flexibility of custom zoning control throughout your home.
- Ease of installation. A ductless is much easier to install than a traditional forced-air system. It only consists of the indoor and outdoor units, along with its conduit, which usually only requires a three-inch hole for the connection. No ductwork to worry about. Also, the outdoor unit can be installed as far as 50 feet away from the indoor unit.
